Links for Digital Citizenship Ideas

Digital Citizenship Week is coming up in Term 4 - so I have added a few links that may (or may not) be of some use.

The first one is a quiz about digital citizenship - are your students good digital citizens?  This quiz may help you find out.

The second one is an updated version of a Digital Citizenship Survival Kit, as sometimes a visual thing can have more impact than any words you can say.  I have blogged about this one before - but the teacher has now put up an updated/improved version with his reasons for each item.  What do you think?

And the last one is from Commonsense.org, with information and ideas.

Digital Citizenship Week - Lessons & Ideas

Digital Citizenship Week is coming up in October - and although this is primarily an idea from US - a lot of the ideas and lessons can be aligned with our classes here in Australia.

In today's world, ruled by Social Media - these are probably good skills for our young ones to have.

Below are a couple of weblinks - two from the US, and one from NSW Education with some hints, tips and ideas.

Digital Survival Kit Idea

This is a re-post of one I put up about 3 or so years ago.  It's a suggestion for a Digital Survival Kit, designed by a teacher in the US for his class .. mainly to reinforce some of what he teaches.  Sometimes visual props can make a point better than all the words can.
Any other suggestions to add?

Padlockto remind you to have strong passwords
Toothbrush:  Would you share your toothbrush?  No? Don't share your passwords either.
Permanent Marker:  EVERYTHING you put on the Internet is there forever
Toothpaste:  You can't get toothpaste back into the tube - nor can you ever take your posts off the Web.
Magnifying Glass:  What shows up when people search you on Google? Is that what you want people to know about you?  Will it get you a job later?
Fake Tattoo:  'Digital Tattoo' instead of 'Digital Footprint'.  Footprints can be washed away - a tattoo is much harder to get rid of.
Sheet of paper:  Screw it up, stomp on it - now smooth it out and try to make it as new as it was. That's what happens with cyber bullying - the marks are always there.
Strainer:  Know how to 'strain the real' from the Internet.  In other words, know how to spot fake stuff and don't get caught out by hoaxes.

Digital Citizenship Survival Kit

Always being one for visual props and ideas, I came across a Digital Citizenship Survival Kit for students.  This has been designed by a teacher in the USA for his digital citizenship classes, to hand out to his students, mainly to reinforce some of what he teaches.
What do you think?  Any other suggestions?

Below is a link to paste in that is a quiz about Digital Citizenship.  It could be interesting to try it out on your class.

Web links

Another quick post as I have just found this blog and website which deals with digital media, thanks to a suggestion from another Library.

The blog has a lot of posts and ideas on teaching SEL, which I believe is part of the WellBeing program here, so it may have a few extra ideas for you.  The educators side of the site has loads of information along with lesson plans and ideas for teaching and sharing tech type stuff.

Hope it is of some use for you all.

Weblinks on Digital Citzenship.

Would you call your students Digital Citizens?  Check out the weblink below and see what you think.  It's a possibility that even though they are constantly connected to technology, they don't actually have what it takes to be a digital citizen!

As well, just as food for thought, I'm sharing these links that I came across that talk about Digital Citizenship including the 5 fluencies, Digital Etiquette and Digital Health and Well-Being.  Something to think about and maybe talk over with your students, especially the etiquette and the health and well-being ideas.

Have a wonderful day - and remember it''s Week 6 - only 4 more to go!

Web 2 Resources

Below are a couple of links to Web 2 Tools that may be handy. These were mentioned on the teacher librarian listserv today and got good recommendations from others as well.

Kidblog is designed for teachers who want to provide each student with an individual blog.  Students publish posts and participate in discussions within a secure classroon blogging community.  Teachers are able to maintain control over student blogs and user accounts.

You can use Kidblog to:
  • Create classroom discussions
  • Learn digital citizenship
  • Reflect on learning
  • Practice writing skills
  • Assess writing
 http://www.voki.com/

Voki is a free service that allows you create avatars, give them a voice by recording speech and then publish them to a blog, website or a profile.  Voki itself is free, however if you decide to upgrade to Voki Classroom, there is a small charge.  I guess it depends on what services you want from it.

http://www.wibbitz.com/

Wibbitz is a text-to-video platform that can apparently change any text based article, post or feed into a short video. This seems to be in beta mode at the moment, but turned the titles of my blog posts into a headline type announcment and made choices of pictures to add to it.  Quite fun to play with. Again, a free service.

Have a great weekend all.
