Displays in the Library

Well, we're into week 2 of term 3 - where has the year gone??  It just seems to have flown by, maybe because of the strange new world that we seem to living in at the moment.
It has definitely been a odd sort of time so far, but we are all still cruisin' along here.

Currently we have a couple of new displays in the Library from some of the classes.

There is one about Volcano's by Year  8 Science where they have made models of various parts of the volcano as well as presenting posters with the relevant information.

and .....

One from Year 7-9 Science who have been working on the Rock Cycle.  They have made up posters with the information they have learned and these are all up on display.

Along with these, there is a small display of brand new Goosebumps books which have recycled around and become some of the most borrowed books again. These are currently being snapped up .. good thing I have extras to refill the display.

Australian History as Fiction

Another new title for our shelves - this one is part of the My Australian Story series which are historical novels for older children.  Each book is written in the style of a fictional diary of a young person living during an important time period or an event that happened during Australian history.

We already have a number on the shelves, dealing with subjects such as Ballarat goldfields, Bombing of Darwin, Cyclone Tracy and this new one is about the Snowy River Scheme.

Blurb:
Eva Fischer has moved to Cabramurra, the highest town in Australia. Eva feels on top of the world too. Surrounded by people of every nationality, Eva makes new friends and tries strange foreign food - such as pizza. Eva learns to ski and ride, and even learns that being half German isn't so bad after all. But all around her, momentous things are happening. The Snowy Mountains Scheme is underway, huge dams have been built, tunnels constructed, homes abandoned, people lost...

They are a great series, well written and suck you into the story.  Well worth a read.

Another Dystopian title added

It seems that stories about Dystopian societies are all the go with the teens at the moment .. Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner and the like.

So to keep the readers of the school happy - we have a new title on the shelf and ready for loan - 'Matched' by Ally Condie.  This is the first in a trilogy and having read it myself, it is certainly a thought-provoking book.

Imagine living in a world where everything is decided for you: what you eat, where you live, when you die, who you love, even which poems, stories and paintings are worth keeping. The Officials who run Cassia’s society leave nothing up to choice. It makes for a more equal and controlled world. A better world. A less cluttered world. A calmer and less complicated world.
But what happens when someone starts to question the choices made for them - and worse still, wants to make their own choices?

What do you do? How do you deal with it?

Four: A Divergent Collection

With the upcoming release of the second movie in this series, there is renewed interest in reading, or in some cases, re-reading this series.

New to our Library today is a short story collection focusing on 'Four' - one of the main characters in the series.  These stories take the reader back before the start of the 'Divergent' series, and give an insight into his motivations and plans.

If anyone wants it - I will have to put it on hold for them ... as it has just been borrowed by a very excited student, who has left with a huge smile.

Makes it all worthwhile, methinks!

New Books here

Just to let you know that we have some new books available to be borrowed.

One is called 'Tracy Tales' and is about the Darwin Business Community and how they survived the Great Cyclone.

Also available for staff is a copy of 'Digital Photography Projects for the Classroom'.  This will be kept with the Teacher Resource materials in my office, if anyone is looking for it.

Following a request from a student, we now have the 'Maze Runner' trilogy here and ready for loan.  Apparently there is a fourth book in the series now as well so I will be looking for that as well.

Also, just to let you know, the DVD of the 'Maze Runner' is also available for loan across at the Public Library along with loads of other titles, so it could be worth checking out what else they have to offer.  Drop in and say Hi to Kylie and Pam.

Random Stuff

A big thank you to Miss Mckenna and Ms McDonald along with Miss Jeanny who have taken over the display board this week.  Looking good ladies.

Each week there should be a 'new' book on display under the 'Book of the Week' label.  These are not necessarily new books, but ones that I think are well worth taking the time to read.  And with a number of our students reading their way through the Library, especially the series, it seems like a good method of introducing them to authors/genres that they may not  come across otherwise.  This weeks offering was 'Slice' by Steven Herrick, which was borrowed almost as soon as I put it out and next week will be 'Obernewtyn' by Isobelle Carmody, which should satisfy the series lovers in our midst as there are another six books there to be read.

This cartoon tickled my librarian sense of humour when I saw it.  But really so true.  Does anyone remember the story?
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and make sure you spend lots of time relaxing and READING!!   Now carry on being your awesome selves.
