There are a few Special days coming up in March to remember.  World Storytelling Day/World Poetry Day and International Day of Forests for a start.   I have links below for people to check them out, if they wish.

Some 'Days' to celebrate

March 3rd is World Maths Day, is a chance to put your skills to the test, practice math skills and to get involved in a worldwide event that celebrates the history of maths.  This is a competition run through Mathletics.

March 20th is World Story Telling Day, where you can celebrate the art of oral storytelling.  It's also a day for people around the globe to listen to, and tell stories in as many different languages as possible.  Most of us go through the day engaging in oral storytelling without even realising that we are doing so.  Have you made up a bedtime story for your child?  Told a friend about your most embarrassing moment? or retold a childhood memory with a sibling?  These are all oral storytelling examples.

World Poetry Day is 21st March.  This is a day to encourage people to read, write, teach and publish poetry, and to recognise the amazing cultural contribution poetry makes to the human society.  Poetry is another form of story telling, and has been used for centuries to pass along knowledge, history and information.  The ancient Bards travelled around the countries, taking their stories, in verse format, to share.

Days to celebrate StoryTelling and Poetry

Just out of interest, there are a couple of special days coming up in March which can be used to celebrate reading - along with the oral art form of storytelling. 

March 20th is World Storytelling Day, which started in Sweden in about 1991 and had spread to the rest of the world by about 2004.  It is significant because it is the first global celebration of oral storytelling and has been important in helping to forge links within communities and between generations. 
Each year usually has a theme - in 2016 the theme will be Strong Women and 2017 will be Transformation.

This then slides effortlessly into World Poetry Day on March 21st - which then glides on into April as National Poetry Month, including Poem in your Pocket Day on April 21st. Poetry is best when shared, so find a way to share your favourites.

Harmony Day & World Poetry Day

Harmony Day

Harmony Day 21 March is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. 
Belonging is what makes us want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. What does belonging mean to you? After almost 15 years of Harmony Day, maybe it’s time to find out.

World Poetry Day (21 March each year) celebrates and promotes the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry worldwide. The day was declared an official observance day by UNESCO in 1999.
You could celebrate World Poetry Day in your school by learning about poems from different cultures, including from pupils’ own cultures. Or investigate different forms of poem, such as the Japanese Haiku or the Arabic Ruba’i.
